The StraaD: The Street for a Better City Climate

Transforming Streets: Spatial, Adaptive, Attractive and Sustainable

Well into the nineteen-sixties the streets were the essential meeting point of the city. But sidewalks started disappearing and more space was reserved for cars and less for people. The chances of meeting one another have decreased. But also the fact that there is less green in a city makes it less pleasant to walk around. Temperatures are rising and cities are becoming too hot. This is what we call the problem of ‘heat islands’; it has a negative effect on the well-being and health of people and even on their work productivity. How can we respond to this changing city climate and make our cities liveable again? The answer is STRAAD. Stijn en Floor demonstrate how streets can contribute to a healthy, liveable and beautiful city.
